INTERVIEW WITH RUKKIT
From paper to walls, with wood or even neons, Thai artist Rukkit Kuanhawte has developed an unique and highly recognizable style of illustration. I discovered his work back in 2011 when I was randomly walking in Bangkok. I had entered a discrete art gallery where he had a few pieces exhibited and I immediately became a fan of his geometric illustrations.
Rukkit is one of the first artist we collaborated with. He is the first of a series of interviews that will immerse us in the lives of these creative people we work with.
Hi Rukkit, how did you start designing
and how would you define your style?
It all started when I had to solve a problem. That problem was how to avoid tearing stencils repeatedly when I needed the same alphabet for several words. I found structure similarities between Thai and English alphabets that can be moved and rotated around so that it becomes an one-block stencil. This means I can create any Thai or English alphabet out of this stencil. Later on, I start applying this technique to art and graphic design. I guess you can call this style graphic art because the basics of starting an artwork is to cut out the real shape and add the ideas and emotions into it.
Where do you take most of your inspiration from?
Most of my inspiration comes from animals because every animal has its own character and natural behavior that can be applied to what I want to portray in my work. But I also combine it with inspirations around me to explain what I’m portraying more directly.
You’re using lots of artistic media, is there one you prefer?
The latest one would be using neons. It’s like experimenting new things without adhering to usual techniques.
I saw a couple of your wooden sculptures.
I guess it’s laser cut, right? The result is great, can you tell us a bit about that?
During the first trial it was laser cutting because I wanted to experiment and see what the outcome would be. For many trials, mistakes were made, slowing the process down. I then decided to buy a jigsaw and do it myself. The good thing is that I control it so the outcome pleases me more. Work that has been cut by laser seems to be too perfect which makes it look too computerized. Different from the work with an electric saw, the outcome is not perfect but I get to learn the process and make use from the mistakes in the future.
The first time I’ve been in Bangkok six years ago, I checked the art scene a bit there. It seems like the number of artists has considerably exploded since. You’re one of the pioneer of this new graphic culture in Thailand, how do you see the new generation growing in your hometown?
I think it makes people more aware and it brings attention to their work. It really is a good when clients understand the artwork because its value of it increases. This makes the new generation become more dedicated to what they do and develop their own style. But because there’s a lot of competition, this will make them do anything in their power to stand out from the crowd and be seen.
You recently had an exhibition in Korea, it’s great to see your work is beginning to be recognized all over the world! Any projects for the future?
Being given the chance to exhibit my work abroad makes me realize that there are many talented artists who inspire me to work harder, both artistically and commercially.

รักกิจนั้นเป็นหนึ่งในคนแรกๆที่เราได้ร่วมงานด้วยและจะเป็นคนแรกที่เราเริ่มทำบทความการสัมภาษณ์ด้วยซึ่งจะทำให้เราเข้าใจกับคนสร้างสรรค์เหล่านี้ที่เราได้ร่วมงานด้วยมากยิ่งึ้น
สวัสดีรักกิจ คุณเป็นยังไงบ้าง
สบายดีครับ ตอนนี้ก็สนุกกับการทำงาน พยายามสร้างงานให้หลากหลายมากขึ้น
คุณได้เริ่มการออกแบบยังไงและจะนิยามงานสสไตล์คุณเช่นไร
การเริ่มต้นทำงานของผมมาจากการแก้ปัญหา การทำบล้อกสเตนซิล คือผมไม่อยากตัดบล้อกสเตซิลบ่อยๆ และไม่อยากตัดตัวหนังสือใหม่ทุกครั้งที่อยากพ่นคำที่แตกต่างกันออกไป จึงนำโครงสร้างตัวอักษรทั้งไทยและอังกฤษ นำมาหารูปทรงที่จะสามารถใช้ร่วมกันและพลิกแพลงการใช้ได้เรื่อยๆ จึงออกมาเป็น one block stencil คือบล้อคเดียวสามารถพ่นได้ททุกตัวอักษรทั้งไทยและอังกฤษ ซึ่งต่อมาได้นำบล้อกนี้มาปรับการใช้งานต่อ เป็นการสร้างงานศิลปะ และกราฟิก จนถึงปัจจุบัน สไตล์งานน่าจะเรียกได้เป็น กราฟิกอาร์ท เพราะพื้นฐานของการสร้างงานคือตัดทอนรูปทรงที่แท้จริงออกมาแล้วใส่แนวคิดกับอารมณ์เข้าไปในงาน
แรงบันดาลใจที่คุณได้รับมานั้นส่วนมากมาจากไหน
แรงบันดาลใจที่ได้ส่วนใหญมาจากสัตว์เพราะสัตว์แต่ละตัวมีคาเรคเตอร์และ พฤติกรรมที่เป็นธรรมชาติของมัน สามารถนำมาตีความให้เข้ากับสิ่งที่ต้องการจะบอกในงานได้ แต่ก็จะนำแรงบันดาลอื่นๆรอบตัวมาผสมอีกเพื่อให้บอกความหมายได้ตรงมากขึ้น
เห็นว่าคุณใช้สื่อศิลปะได้หลากหลายมากๆเลย มีอันไหนที่คุณชื่นชอบเป็นพิเศษมั้ย
นล่าสุดก็น่าจะเป็นการนำไปทำเป็น ไฟนีออน เหมือนเป็นการทดลองทำอะไรใหม่ๆโดยไม่มีการยึดติดกับเทคนิคเดิมๆ สนุกดี
ผมได้มีโอกาศเห็นงานแกะสลักของคุณจากไม้ ผมขอเดาว่ามันเป็นการตัดด้วยเลเซอร์ใช่มั้ย ผลลัพท์ที่ออกมามันดีมากๆเลย คุณช่วยอธิบายเกี่ยวกับชิ้นงานนั้นหน่อยได้มั้ย
งานช่วงแรกจะเป็นเลเซอร์เพราะเราอยากทดลองดูว่างาน จะออกมาเป็นอย่างไร แต่พองานผ่านกระบวนการเยอะมันทำให้ล่าช้าและมีการผิดพลาดขึ้นได้ ตอนหลังจึงซื้อเครื่องเลื้อยฉลุไฟฟ้ามาทำเองเลย ทำอย่างที่ออกมาก็เป็นสิ่งที่ต้องการและควบคุมได้ดีขึ้น งานที่ออกจากเลเซอร์มันจะสมบูรณ์เป้ะมาก จนบางทีรู้สึกว่ามันคอมพิวเตอร์มากเกินไป ส่วนงานที่เลื่อยเองมันจะไม่สมบูรณ์มากแต่เราก็ได้เรียนกระบวนการทำและรู้ข้อผิดพลาด เพื่อนำมาพัฒนางานในครั้งต่อไป
ผมจำได้ครั้งแรกที่ผมไปเมืองไทยเมื่อหกปีที่แล้ว ผมได้สำรวจงานศิลปะทั้งหลายที่นั่นแล้วได้สังเกตเห็นว่าจำนวนของศิลปินเก่งๆได้เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้นมาเรื่อยๆตั้งแต่นั้นมา คุณเองก็เป็นหนึ่งในผู้บุกเบิกวงการกราฟฟิคในประเทศไทย คุณคิดอย่างไรกับเด็กรุ่นใหม่สมัยนี้
ผมว่ามันทำให้มีคนมาสนใจและเข้าใจงานในแขนงนี้มาก
ขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่ดีมาก พอมีลูกค้าที่เข้าใจงาน มูลค่างานก็เกิดขึ้น เด็กรุ่นใหม่ก็กล้าที่จะทุ่มเทศึกษาพัฒนางานที่เป็นตัวของตัวเองมากขึ้น แต่ทีนี้พอมีคนทำเยอะขึ้นก็จะเกิดการแข่งขันขึ้นมา มันก็จะเป็นการคัดเลือกไปในตัว คนที่มีความมุ่งมั่น พัฒนาตัวเอง ได้โดดเด่นกว่าคนอื่นก็จะเป็นที่จับตามอง
ผมได้เห็นข่าวล่าสุดของคุณที่ได้ไปจัดงานแสดงศิลปะที่เกาหลี ยินดีด้วยครับ งานของคุณกำลังจะเริ่มได้เป็นที่รู้จักไปทั่วทุกมุมโลกแล้ว ไม่ทราบว่าจะมีแผนงานอะไรใหม่ในอนาคตไหม
พอไปแสดงงานต่างประเทศทำให้รู้ว่ามีคนเก่งๆอยู่มาก เป็นแรงบันดาลใจกระตุ้นให้ต้องทำงานให้ดีมากขึ้น ทั้งงานศิลปะ และงานคอมเมอเชียว
